What is a Cateraptasaurus?
Please welcome the newest addition to Alban’s Compact Construction Equipment Showroom.
The 12 foot, 9 inch, 12,000 pound dinosaur created from tractor parts by sculptor, Derek Arnold. Arnold was one of 10 sculptors selected out of a pool of 130 applicants in a competition to design a site specific plan at the Evergreen House in Baltimore City.
“My work is inspired by observations of industrial and natural forms. Discarded steel and natural wood are recycled into new objects. These objects include glimpses of a past use while providing commentary on the ever-increasing importance of industry and technology in our lives.” (Reprinted from the Washington Post)
To show our patronage for art, Alban contributed $5,000 to Arnold to help him finish his six-ton CAT dinosaur. After a total of 800 man hours, 500 hours of Derek’s, and 300 hours of extra assistance in a 2 month period, the creature was completed.
The Cateraptasaurus consists of a 1946 Caterpillar pan scraper as the chest and part of the tail and head, scraper goose neck, cutting edges, and bucket tips.
The Cateraptasaurus now stands proudly with his fresh coat of CAT yellow paint outside of Alban’s CCE Showroom. We continue to receive phone calls from locals informing us how much they love driving by it everyday. We even get occasional visitors that stop by to get their picture taken with him. Everyday he watches over the busy streets of Pulaski Highway and serves as a great local landmark.
